Arterial Doppler

An arterial doppler is a non-invasive diagnostic test performed to evaluate blood flow in different areas of the arms and legs. Doppler technology uses sound waves to measure the severity of blockages in major arteries.

symptoms of poor blood flow

Symptoms which may alert patients and doctors to possible trouble may include:

  • Leg or arm pain at rest or with exertion
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Fatigue
  • Non-healing ulcers or gangrene

what to expect during an arterial doppler

During the Arterial Doppler procedure, blood pressure may taken with a cuff at various points along the arms and legs. A handheld device called a transducer is moved across each area. Using 2-dimensional imageing and blood velocity measurements, the transducer detects arterial narrowings or blockages.

what can an arterial doppler diagnose?

An arterial Doppler assists in the diagnosis of various medical conditions which may include:

  • Blocked arteries
  • Blood clots
  • Aneurysms

how is the test performed?

The arterial Doppler test is performed in the vascular lab and takes about a half-hour to be completed.  There is no risk involved in the study.
